Article Abstract:

Many UK health authorities are unwilling to pay the higher cost of treating haemophiliacs with recombinant factor VIII, a genetically produced artificial equivalent of factor VIII, the chemical link which allows blood to clot. They will pay only for treatment with the less expensive factor VIII produced from human blood. Doctors believe that the less expensive product leaves haemophiliacs vulnerable to viral infection, and are campaigning for all haemophiliacs to be treated with the artificial version.

Josef Skvorecky, 69, has lived in Canada for 23 years, running a publishing house called 68 Publishers with his wife Zdena. It published Czech authors not permitted in Czechoslovakia and was a means of communication for the Czech community internationally until closing in 1992. He is a realist and was never a Communist. His novels 'The Miracle Game' and 'The Engineer of Human Souls' depict his stylised alter ego Danny Smiricky.

Adeela Rashid is the deputy speaker of the new Muslim Parliament of Great Britain. Her concerns are to promote acceptance of Islam within social, education and health contexts. The Muslim parliament intends to campaign against anti-Muslim prejudice, for more public funding to establish Islamic schools and a university and for circumcision to be readily obtainable in hospitals.
