David Blagdon received a discretionary life sentence in 1978 for setting fire to the curtains in an empty church. His case has failed to attract much publicity, possibly because there was no significant miscarriage of justice, as he had admitted to being mentally unstable.

The court in which Gary Hart, who is accused of causing death by dangerous driving when his car left the M62 motorway and came to rest across a railway track near Selby, England, is being tried has heard the 999 call he made. The car was hit by a train, killing 10 people.

The solar eclipse on Aug 11, 1999, was a significant social experience for Britons. Most experienced more than 90%, and some viewed a total eclipse. For all those who saw it, the eclipse will prove extremely memorable. Traffic came to a halt as people tried to view the eclipse, and many people left their homes and offices. There was cloudy weather in Devon, England, and Cornwall, England, which had attracted many people seeking the best view of the eclipse, and the North-east proved to be one of the best places from which to see it.
