More women equals money
Article Abstract:
Women now account for 52% of new solicitors and 40% of new barristers in the UK, according to Opportunity 2000 Chairwoman Lady Howe. However, only 14% of women solicitors become partners within their first 10 years, compared with 27% of men. Opportunity 2000, an employer-led organisation which aims to boost the participation of women in the workforce, hopes to add more law firms to its membership in 1997. Lady Howe feels that the prospects for women in the legal profession are improving, although some women lawyers believe that some firms are still not committed to equality.

A shot in the dark
Article Abstract:
Parents who believe that their child has been permanently damaged by a vaccine have until recently received very little support in their efforts to find out what went wrong and to obtain compensation. The Legal Aid Board is very cautious about backing such cases, as they are regarded as being at the frontiers of medicine and law, and the only official assistance available at present is through the Vaccine Damage Pay Unit. However, the situation may begin to improve as solicitors coordinate campaigning action on this issue.
