My plea to Mr Straw: listen to Chile's damaged people
Article Abstract:
The decision by the UK House of Lords that former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet does not benefit from diplomatic immunity has been warmly welcomed by many ordinary people in Chile, particularly those who were singled out for cruel treatment under the Pinochet regime. Home Secretary Jack Straw should pay particular attention to the views of these people as he decides whether Pinochet should be extradited to Spain to stand trial, and not allow himself to be influenced by those who feel that Pinochet's detention endangers the transition to democracy in Chile.

At long last this Government faces a decision it cannot delay
Article Abstract:
The UK government faces a strict deadline as it considers whether to extradite former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet. It therefore cannot postpone this decision, as it has many other potentially controversial decisions. There is particular pressure on Home Secretary Jack Straw, who is not in a position to negotiate a delay. It is likely that he will approve Pinochet's extradition, but this will probably not be the end of the matter. His verdict will have implications for New Labour as a whole.

Will Mr Straw join the pantheon of our heroes in Latin America?
Article Abstract:
UK Home Secretary Jack Straw would make a significant contribution to peace and democracy in Latin America if he were to agree to Spain's request for the extradition of former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet. British involvement in Latin America has not always been positive, but the arrest of Pinochet in the UK has at least served to break his hold over ordinary Chileans. Indeed, Chileans may even decide to put Pinochet on trial themselves.
