Glitz fails to hide the real Lebanon
Article Abstract:
The Lebanese government is keen to give the country a more positive image. It is making popular tourist resorts look more attractive, and in some cases is forcing owners of buildings to carry out repairs. President Hrawi has also called for a civil society and civil marriage, attracting opposition from Muslim and Christian clerics. However, there are also indications that Lebanon is still far from being liberal. This has been reflected recently in the public hanging of two men for murder during a domestic robbery.

A deadly battle of wits and invention waged between warring neighbours
Article Abstract:
The United Nations peace-keeping army in southern Lebanon comes across many ingenious weapons used in the Hizbollah guerrilla war against Israel's occupation troops in the region. Booby-trap mines planted by the Israelis on the Hizbollah's infiltration trails, for example, are defused by the Hizbollah and replanted around the Israeli gun batteries. Hizbollah guerrillas also empty the explosives from the shells and mortars fired by the Israelis into southern Lebanon and use them to make roadside bombs.
