New leader struggles to exert control
Article Abstract:
There is widespread scepticism in Indonesia about the sincerity of new President Jusuf Habibie, who will find it difficult to establish his credibility. There is still considerable uncertainty about whether the country's military commanders all support Habibie and whether they were influential in President Suharto's decision to resign. Many ordinary Indonesians have doubts about whether Habibie will be able to rescue the country from its severe economic difficulties.

Dance for joy as dictator steps down
Article Abstract:
Many Indonesians have warmly welcomed President Suharto's decision to resign. However, they are also aware that there is still a need to establish a democratic government, and feel that there may not be much improvement if former Vice-President Habibie replaces Suharto. Many people are struggling financially, and believe that Suharto and his family should be investigated, as they seem to have taken a large part of the country's wealth for themselves.

Chinese suffer for their success as mobs target the 'Jews of the East.' (Indonesia)
Article Abstract:
Ethic Chinese in Indonesia are being targeted by ordinary Indonesians eager to find a scapegoat for the country's problems. The Indonesian government has done little to protect the ethnic Chinese, and many are now seeking to leave the country. Many of Indonesia's most high-profile businessmen are ethnic Chinese, and this has given the impression that the entire community, which accounts for no more than 3% of Indonesia's population, is wealthy.
