New spread reduces fat in the body

Finnish manufacturer, Raisio, will launch the cholesterol-reducing margarine, Benecol, in the UK from the start of 1998 after striking an agreement to promote the product in Europe with US-based McNeil Consumer Products. Daily consumption of Benecol is claimed to result in a 10% reduction in blood cholesterol and will compete directly in the UK with a new margarine from Unilever. Benecol's launch will signal a new phase in the market for products which fill the void between medicines and foods, known as nutraceuticals, and along with Unilever's offering will spark a margarine battle for a market valued at over GB 1bn worldwide.
