Nice work if you can get it
Article Abstract:
The BBC believes that paying high salaries to its top executives is justified because it needs to be able to attract and retain such people. It is not necessarily wrong for the BBC to take this view, but paying very high salaries to top executives does not fit in well with the BBC's recent record of making cost savings at the expense of ordinary employees. Another problem is that the BBC is still a public corporation, even though it may well be operating in a job market in which it competes with private sector employers.

Fair exchange is no robbery - it could be a new source of work
Article Abstract:
The local exchange trading system (Lets), which allows people to barter goods and services in a particular area, has considerable potential to generate jobs and income in the social economy. There are now many such schemes, mainly in the US and the UK, with sellers offering goods or services and agreeing a price, which is set in non-monetary terms, directly with the purchaser. The Lets currency remains in a specific area, and has the ability to boost the local economy through an economic 'multiplier' effect.

Sell-off pledges broken by power and water giants
Article Abstract:
The UK government gave assurances that the privatisation of water, gas and electricity companies would allow them to invest more extensively in improving service levels. However, these companies actually reduced investment in the period 1993-1995, according to recent statistics. This revelation has prompted the Labour party to consider a considerable rise in the windfall taxes which it plans to impose on these companies.
