Article Abstract:

The Gandhara kingdom, which existed for 1,000 years after Alexander the Great died and left the Greek garrisons of India and Afghanistan isolated from their homeland, left a legacy of Indo-Hellenic monasteries, classical cities and acropoli in north-west Pakistan. In the Swat valley there is a perfectly preserved monastic complex with halls, chapels and burial mounds, while visitors to the ruins of Pushkalavati, the City of the Lotus, will see grey clay walls rising 80ft out of the cane-breaks. The other great city of Gandhara is located at Taxila.
