Noddy's off to Treasure Island
Article Abstract:
The children's books of Enid Blyton are generally seen as being old-fashioned at a time when videos and computer games are proliferating. Some observers find her books racist, sexist and full of snobbery, and there have been attempts over recent years to eliminate some of the elements which could cause particular offense. Her books remain extremely popular, and her family will now benefit greatly financially as the copyright is sold off for at least 10 million pounds sterling.

Coming back from the Brink
Article Abstract:
The struggle against apartheid was a vital element of everyday life, according to South African novelist Andre Brink. He is greatly relieved that other subjects can now be addressed, and his most recent book, 'Imaginings of Sand,' is a more personal story. He switches freely between Afrikaans and English, and this sometimes produces episodes which work only in one language. Like many of his other works, his most recent contains some violence incidents.

Penguin goes to Hollywood
Article Abstract:
Penguin Books has undergone considerable changes over recent years. These have restored it to success, but have also involved redundancies. The changes are set to continue under new chief executive Michael Lynton, currently the head of Disney Publishing. The company has traditionally been seen as something of a national institution in the UK, but it is in fact the same as other large publishing concerns, and is increasingly commercial in nature.
