Article Abstract:

About 100 babies a year are born with cranio-synostosis, where the expansion joints of their skull bones (sutures) fuse prematurely. Many children with cranio-synostosis are not diagnosed. In the majority of cases it is cosmetic, but if several sutures are fused, restricting brain growth, mental retardation could result unless surgery is carried out. Parents of less severely affected children can choose surgery, which is best carried out between three and six months.
