OTC/prescription medicines retailing
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical sales in the UK amounted to 6.8 billion pounds sterling in 1996. Over the counter (OTC) medicines accounted for 20% of this total, with the largest segment of OTC sales being nutritional supplements. The number of prescriptions dispensed increased by 20% over the period 1990-1995, but financial restrictions in the National Health Service affected pharmacists' profit margins. The largest number of prescriptions was for central nervous and cardio-vascular system drugs. The major retailer of both ethical and OTC products is Boots the Chemists Ltd., which accounts for almost 18% of pharmaceutical sales.

Health food retailing
Article Abstract:
The UK health foods market grew by an annual 4% between 1992 and 1997. Estimated sales for 1998 are 2,162 million pounds sterling. The biggest growth is in convenience foods, with ready meals continuing to be important. The grocery sector is well-placed to benefit from this aspect of growth. Another growth area, driven by concerns over genetically-modified organisms, is organic food. Specialist health food retailers, including Holland & Barrett and General Nutrition Companies Inc., are strong in this sector. Pharmaceutical retailers are targeting the vitamin and mineral supplement market.
