Octavio Paz
Article Abstract:
Writer and diplomatist Octavio Paz became interested in far left politics and began writing while studying at the University of Mexico. His first book of poetry, 'Luna silvestre,' was published when he was only 19. He began to develop an interest in fragmented forms, learnt from Oriental literature and Aztec art. He published further books, and in 1937 was invited to the Congress of Antifascist Writers in Valencia, Spain, where he had his first real meeting with the poets of Spain and France. He was Mexican ambassador to India between 1962 and 1968 and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.

Ernst Junger
Article Abstract:
Writer Ernst Junger developed a strong interest in travel and exotic countries at an early age. He ran away from home to join the Foreign Legion in 1913, an experience which was later recounted in his 1936 work 'Kinderspielen.' He studied for his school leaving examination at the Gildermeister Institut, the atmosphere of which was later evoked in the 1973 novel 'Die Steinschleuder.' He served in the army from 1914 to 1923, and then studied zoology at the University of Leipzig, Germany, and at Naples, Italy.

Dionys Mascolo
Article Abstract:
Writer and political activist Dionys Mascolo played an active role in the French Resistance during the second world war. He worked as a reader for Gallimard, and was able to introduce this publishing house to 'La Vie tranquille,' the 1944 work of Marguerite Duras, with whom he had begun a relationship in 1942. Robert Antelme, from whom Duras divorced in 1946, became a publisher after the second world war and issued 'St Just,' Mascolo's first book.
