On your marks: record grades trigger the race for places
Article Abstract:
UK universities now have confirmed offers on more than 150,000 of the 290,000 places which they have made available for autumn 1996. The pass rate for A-levels has been extremely high, and this means that fewer places will be available through the clearing system. However, students who have achieved grades just below those required may still be able to gain a university place. There have been some calls for the standard of A-level examinations to be reviewed, amidst concerns that the examinations may be becoming too easy.

PM tells schools: get tough
Article Abstract:
Teachers are likely to receive more classroom support in their efforts to deal with unruly pupils as part of a UK government 12-point education programme. This will be welcomed by teachers, many of whom believe that the present Department for Education and Employment guidelines on detentions and exclusions work too much in the favour of such pupils. Other initiatives will include allowing grant-maintained schools to borrow up to the value of their existing assets in order to meet growing demand for places.
