Once a bandit ...
Article Abstract:
The Indian parliament should introduce a 50% women's quota during its current session, according to Phoolan Devi, formerly known as the Bandit Queen and now a member of the federal parliament. She was accused in Jan 1997 of the massacre in 1981 of 22 higher caste landowners in the state of Uttar Pradesh, but ignored a summons to appear in court. She went into hiding for a while, but has now taken up her seat in parliament again. She is particularly committed to ensuring that the views of low-caste women are represented in parliament.

For bananas costing 1 pound sterling, the labourer gets 3p
Article Abstract:
Workers involved in producing multinational Central American bananas must endure harsh conditions. They are exposed to toxic pesticides, preservatives and bleach, and injuries are common. In Costa Rica's banana plantations, there are 52,000 workers, most of whom are represented by elected permanent committees on their farms, rather than by independent trade unions. Chiquita, which owns many plantations, emphasizes that medical monitoring is provided for workers exposed to agro-chemicals.
