Prefabs sprout in the landmark school
Article Abstract:
Hallfield School in Paddington, London, England, which opened in 1954, was notable for its extremely futuristic design. The architect, Sir Denys Lasdun, designed a low-lying and curvaceous building which is still widely admired and is regarded as a building in which it is pleasant both to teach and to be taught. There are now plans to add an extension to the school which will reflect the gentle radicalism which formed the basis for the original building.

A few of your favourite things
Article Abstract:
A recent survey of people's favourite designs of the 1990s found that men tend to appreciate machines and gadgets which are often of little practical use, while women prefer more organic things, such as gardens. Many different items were mentioned, however. These included a series of stamps designed by Mark Pearce for the Post Office, the Soft Little Easy chair designed by Ron Arad, the latest ring-pull tins and the Audio Innovations Alto CD player.
