Gingrich, once hero of the US right, to quit as Speaker
Article Abstract:
The political career of Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is likely to come to an end following his decision not to seek re-election. He has accepted at least part of the blame for the poor performance of the Republican party in the mid-term Congressional elections. However, he stresses that the Republicans still control both Houses and a majority of state governors' mansions. He will remain in the House until 2000 as Representative from the suburb of Atlanta, GA, where he lives.

Paris tightens grip on Corsica warlords
Article Abstract:
The French government has begun to adopt a much tougher stance on the problems in Corsica. It has detained almost all the members of A Cuncolta Naziunalista, the political wing of the Front for the National Liberation of Corsica, and there have been a number of police raids on the homes of presumed nationalists in Corsica. There have been fewer attacks by Corsican nationalists in mainland France, and firm action against nationalists has not prompted public outcry in Corsica itself.
