Out of the window, a lifetime's comfort
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party has declared a commitment to encouraging people to save and build up assets to pass on to younger generations. However, social policies have in fact made this impossible. Long-term care facilities for the elderly in NHS hospitals have been closed down, and the elderly are being cared for in very expensive private residential and nursing homes, the cost of which uses up all their savings very quickly. No wealth is left to pass on to children, and this is angering people who have worked hard and saved as much as they can.

How free can we get with their information?
Article Abstract:
The recently published Scott report raises very significant questions about the amount of information which the UK government should disclose to the general public. Currently, there are many secrecy provisions governing the rights of the general public regarding the disclosure of information, and there is no general right for ordinary people to be informed about government procedures. This has prompted calls for a Freedom of Information Act, which would have an extensive impact on the Civil Service's relationship to parliament.

Questions over holiday sealed Mellor's fate
Article Abstract:
Minister for the Arts David Mellor resigned after Mrs Bauwen's libel case against the People newspaper demonstrated his lack of judgement in accepting a holiday as a gift. Previous publicity about an alleged affair with actress Ms de Sancha did not warrant resignation but continuing newspaper reports about his lack of seeking prime ministerial approval for the holiday created further doubts about Mr Mellor's suitability for his post.
