Packaging the classics
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed developments in the world of classical music in the period 1986-1996. Some composers have faded away, but there has been a general revival in interest in classical music. New approaches to musical criticism have emerged, especially with the launch of BBC Music Magazine. Economic conditions have been difficult, but no major opera company or orchestra has been forced out of business. Indeed, new music venues have been built in some places. There are still many people who love composing and performing music, even on a very small scale.

Marching to a different tune
Article Abstract:
The music of the second world war period shows a great variety and accomplishment, but it differs from music of other periods of the 20th century in its motivation. Total war made it impossible for composers and artists to act simply for the best, with some believing that art should be upheld in times of conflict while others believed that it should be submitted to the cause. Some composers used music to express patriotic themes, while other used it to portray the horrors of war.

Flow my tears
Article Abstract:
John Dowland was one of the most famous and highly respected composer-performers in Elizabethan times. He was particularly successful with his 'Lachrimae,' which influenced other composers and was cited by a number of poets and playwrights. He has been widely regarded as extremely melancholy, but care must be taken not to attribute highly subjective emotions to pre-Romantic artists. The Consort of Musicke has recently re-released its collected recordings of Dowland's works.
