Patrick Trainer

Article Abstract:

Trade unionist and local government officer Patrick Trainer was born into a devout Irish Catholic family in Glasgow, Scotland. He came from a very modest background, and had a life-long interest in the concerns of the poor. He was active in the General Strike in 1926, and also participated in the life of the parish of St Francis, run by Franciscan friars. He make railway wagons during the second world war, and became a full-time organiser for the General and Municipal Workers Union in 1948. He was Chmn of the Labour Party in Scotland before the 1964 general election.

James Breen

Teacher James Breen attended St Aloysius College in Glasgow, Scotland, before studying Classics at Glasgow University. He trained at Jordanhill College of Education before becoming an assistant teacher of Classics at Our Lady's High School in Motherwell, Scotland, in 1929. He became Rector of St Columbus High School in Cowdenbeath, Scotland, in 1940, and from 1945 to 1955 was Rector of St Joseph's High School in Kilmarnock, Scotland. He was Rector of St Patrick's High School in Coatbridge, Scotland, between 1955 and 1973.

Jim Baxter

Footballer Jim Baxter was born in Hill of Beath, Scotland, in 1939. He began playing football for Halbeath Juveniles, then moved to Crossgates Primrose. He played for Glasgow Rangers between 1960 and 1965.
