Article Abstract:
Guitarist Rainer Ptacek emigrated with his parents from Germany to the US at the age of five. He was introduced to blues music through the work of white artists, and was greatly influenced by British blues bands. He gained employment repairing guitars, and in 1984 formed Das Combo. His unique guitar style, which involved using a thumb-pick and playing fingerstyle, was particularly seen on the 1991 song 'Worried Spirits.'

Michael Karoli

Guitarist, singer, violinist and cellist Michael Karoli was born in Straubing, Germany, in 1948. He played in bands while reading Law and studying music theory under Holger Czukay. He joined a quartet formed by Czukay in 1968. This became electronic group Can.

John Fahey

Guitarist and songwriter John Fahey was born in Takoma Park, MD, in 1939. He bought his first guitar at the age of 14. He studied philosophy at the American University in Washington, DC, before releasing his second album in 1963.
