Payment in shares outlawed in bid to save 110m pounds sterling

The UK government's 1996 Budget contains measures designed to reduce the number of people who delay income tax and avoid National Insurance contributions by being paid in shares in their own companies. Stricter capital gains tax rules will be introduced, ensuring that nobody can roll over a taxable gain into a security which is not taxed, and it will no longer be possible to avoid stamp duty by issuing foreign currency bearer shares. These measures will lead to tax savings estimated at 110 million pounds sterling in 1997-1998.

UK computer company ICL gives considerable attention to training graduates, and this ensures that it attracts the best applicants. It is a very large company, but this does not mean that it has an inflexible approach to training. It focuses on providing a framework of training and experience, and therefore recruits graduates for specific jobs rather than to join a particular management course. It often transfers staff between territories, and around 10% of UK jobs are filled by graduates from outside the UK.
