Perk runs out of fuel?
Article Abstract:
The Inland Revenue regards a company car as a 'benefit in kind,' and charges income tax for the privilege of having a company car to any employee who has a reimbursement package totalling more than 8,500 pounds sterling a year. Some employees still prefer to have a company car, as they do not then have to budget for expenses such as servicing and road tax. Others decide to opt out of their employers company car scheme, preferring to take a monthly cash alternative. This may be increasingly the case if company cars are taxed at even higher rates in the future.

How to spot a bargain in a rights offer
Article Abstract:
A rights issue involves a company raising money by making an exclusive share offer to existing shareholders. New shares are made available at a discount to the current market price in a fixed proportion to existing holdings. Regardless of the level of the discount, the value of an investor's holding after the rights have been taken up will in theory be equivalent to the value of the shares before the issue added to the money used to purchase the new shares. It is important that investors look carefully at why a company is raising new capital.

Free lunch? Not quite ...
Article Abstract:
Scrip issues are 'free' shares issued by companies which actually bring no material gain to shareholders. They are often issued when a company's shares are considered 'expensive' as a way of encouraging new investors. Existing shareholders need take no action when a company announces a scrip issue. If the shareholder decides to sell before the new certificate arrives, then it must be made clear that the intention is to sell 'old' shares which are equivalent to a certain number of 'new' shares.
