Pro-Europe Tories turn on PM
Article Abstract:
Senior pro-European members of the Conservative party have attacked prime minister John Major for trying to gain the support of Eurosceptics within the party. They believe that the UK's foreign policy is being led in the wrong direction simply in order to try to ensure party unity, and are soon to fight back against the Eurosceptics' influence with a positioning statement. They are particularly concerned to ensure that the party does not fight the next general election on the basis of an anti-European approach.

Disillusion rife among 'wets.' (controversy following defection of Conservative MP Alan Howarth to Labour party)
Article Abstract:
The recent defection of Conservative MP Alan Howarth to the Labour party has highlighted the concern of some of those on the 'wet' wing of the party about prime minister John Major's efforts to ensure the support of the right wing. His departure could fuel the fight for the very core of the party, with the centre-left expressing more openly its concern about the measures which John Major may be prepared to adopt in the run-up to the next general election.

Major scrapes in by five votes
Article Abstract:
The Conservative government has succeeded by a margin of five votes in defeating a Labour motion criticising its European policy. A number of the Conservative backbenchers who currently do not have the party whip voted with the government, and this may form the basis for their readmission to the parliamentary party. A political crisis has been averted, but considerable controversy was caused when former chancellor Norman Lamont voted with the opposition.
