Professor Leon Edel
Article Abstract:
English scholar and writer Joseph Leon Edel was born in the US, but attended university in Canada. While at university, he became strongly influenced by Henry James, and wrote a dissertation on James's theatrical years at the Sorbonne. After the second world war, he was contacted by Rupert Hart-Davis, who had established a publishing firm. He produced an edition of James's plays, and issued the first volume of a biography of James in 1953, followed by a second edition in 1962. The biography eventually ran to five volumes, with the last volume being published in 1972.

Professor C.J.F. Dowsett
Article Abstract:
Armenian scholar Charles Dowsett first came into contact with Armenian when studying under Professor Harold Bailey at Peterhouse, Cambridge University, England. He gained diplomas in Armenian and Georgian in Paris, France, and in 1954 was appointed to a new Lectureship in Armenian at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. He was later Calouste Gulbenkian Professor of Armenian Studies at Oxford University, England, for 26 years. He also produced children's literature, including the 1972 publication 'Armenian Folktales and Fables.'

Professor David Burnley
Article Abstract:
English scholar David Burnley was born in Wakefield, England, in 1941. He studied English at Durham University, England, and in 1968 took a Tutorial Research Fellowship at Bedford College, London University. He took his first lectureship at Lancaster University, England, in 1969.
