Public face of the Masons defends right to 'privacy.' (Commons Home Affairs Select Committee votes to investigate the influence of Freemasonry)
Article Abstract:
The United Grand Lodge of England has promised to support an investigation by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee into the influence of Freemasonry in the police and judiciary. Grand Secretary Michael Higham has surprised observers by apparently encouraging a climate of openness in an organisation which has traditionally been extremely secretive. He is keen to emphasise the strict rule that Freemasonry is not to be used to gain advantage.

New barons of the food cupboard
Article Abstract:
Supermarket chains such as Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco now play a key role in the UK retail industry. Many operators are now opening outlets where a wide range of in-store services, such as cash machines and dry-cleaning, are available, and such outlets will increasingly determine the future of retailing in the UK. At the same time, the top executives of these chains are also taking on a significant role in national life.

He's fit, but can he beat the scrum?
Article Abstract:
Sir Richard Scott, chairman of the arms-to-Iraq inquiry, which is soon to publish its report, has proved a very difficult person for politicians to deal with. He has based his inquiry work on the premise that the inquisitor's role is to unveil the truth, not to permit it to be covered up by legalistic arguments. He has refused to be influenced by politicians, and has made great efforts to be seen to be extremely fair.
