Bitter harvest on the steppes
Article Abstract:
The inhabitants of Mikhail Gorbachev's home village were very proud when he was elected general secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR in 1985. They believed that he would introduce many changes, bringing about a better way of life for ordinary people. However, they are now disillusioned, seeing Gorbachev as a negative rather than a positive influence on Russian history. They now believe that Gorbachev's attempts to make changes simply caused chaos and made life even harder for ordinary people.

Chechen puppet walks the high wire
Article Abstract:
Salambek Khadzhiyev, chairman of Chechnya's so-called government of national revival, is no more than a front-man for Russia in Chechnya. His power is very limited, and he is seen as a traitor by supporters of Dzhokhar Dudayev, former head of Chechnya's secessionist regime. He is forced to move around constantly in order to avoid assassination, and must spend a lot of his time begging Moscow for money.
