Punching through paper
Article Abstract:
Melvyn Bragg is an author and broadcaster who has written a novel called 'The Soldier's Return' which draws on the experiences of his own family. He sees the British people as having had to tolerate low pay, bad housing, and bad jobs. His novel was written after the death of his father, and deals with the return of a soldier in 1946. There are differences between his own family life and that depicted in his novel, but his family provided inspiration for his work.

Article Abstract:
Writer Richard Sennett feels that the theme of human insufficiency has been a key element in his writing since 'The Uses of Disorder' in 1970. He regards the idea that people can make themselves whole as the most significant of all modern illusions. He regards himself as an old-fashioned humanist and, to a certain extent, an old-fashioned democratic socialist, believing that modern society demeans the dignity of the human subject.
