Redwood's bandwagon ready to roll
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major has already stepped up his campaign to be re-elected as leader of the Conservative Party in the light of strong indications that he will be opposed by John Redwood, the secretary of state for Wales. It is also likely that former chancellor Norman Lamont will withdraw his own candidacy in favour of John Redwood. A challenge from John Redwood would have a very damaging impact on the carefully created appearance of cabinet unity in support of John Major.

'Devastated' Hamilton in libel-trial climbdown
Article Abstract:
The Guardian newspaper has received a large financial contribution to the costs of fighting a libel case against former Conservative minister Neil Hamilton and political lobbyist Ian Greer from the two men themselves. Greer and Hamilton have been obliged to drop the case, a move which some observers attribute to worsening relations between the two men. Dropping the case will be a relief to the Conservative party, as prime minister John Major was to have appeared as a witness.
