Reflections of the master
Article Abstract:
Rembrandt's 'A Woman Bathing In A Stream' shows his mistress, Hendrikje Stoffels. It is one of four or five paintings in which she posed for him in the period 1654 to 1656. This piece has been carried out with what the Dutch know as 'liquidated freedom.' The painting is thick on the edge of the right sleeve, but very thin on the skin and the bust. The impression is that Rembrandt worked on it extremely quickly, regarding it as an oil sketch, rather than a finished painting. The way in which the subject's calves meet the water line is especially interesting.

Old master and old mistresses
Article Abstract:
Susannah and the Elder, painted in 1636, contains a number of psychological and sexual points that show Rembrandt's mature understanding and interpretation of the sexual relationships between men and women. The exploitation of voyeurism in this picture, with accompanying innocence and vulnerability, are all the more surprising when considering the artist was just 30 at the time. He always used ordinary, un-idealised women when painting female nudes and, in this respect, he annoyed even his contemporaries.
