'If poll is lost the slaughter will begin.'
Article Abstract:
East Timor has held a referendum on whether it should be independent, and a member of the militia that opposes independence has threatened slughter and civil war if the voters ask for independence. The turn-out at the referendum was 98.6% and predictions are that the majority will favor independence following 23 years in which East Timor has been occupied by Indonesia in a brutal fashion. The Indonesian government argues that it is maintaining order, though there are partsof the military that are reportedly helping the militia.

Anarchy in Timor as poll result looms
Article Abstract:
The result of a referendum on independence, held in East Timor, is to be announced, and and armed gangs opposing independence are attacking staff from the United Nations (UN) and burning houses. General Wiranto, defense minister of Indonesia, is scheduled to arrive in East Timor, though his aim is unclear. His arrival could help to ease the situation since he is supposed to be responsible for security in East Timor. The Indonesian army is thought to contain elements who are seeking to create a civil war.
