Robert Simpson
Article Abstract:
Composer and writer Robert Simpson studied under Herbert Howells in London, England, between 1942 and 1944. In 1951, he took his DMus at Durham University, England, and joined the BBC as a producer in 1952. He developed a very strong talent for communication, and gained a strong reputation for his writing about music. He will be most remembered for his own music, having composed 11 symphonies, 15 string quartets and a wide range of music for brass bands, choirs and chamber groups.

Alfred Schnittke
Article Abstract:
Composer Alfred Schnittke began studying music theory and piano when his father was posted to Vienna, Austria, in 1945. He began to teach himself harmony when his family returned to the Soviet Union in 1946. He entered the army music college at the age of 15, and in 1953 became a student at the Moscow Conservatory. He was blacklisted in the early 1960s, and never received permission to attend premieres of his works abroad.

Romanian violinist and composer George Enescu, who died in 1955, is profiled. He composed continuously from the age of five, with his greatest work being the 1931 epic opera 'Oedipe.'
