Robert Soetens

Violinist Robert Soetens showed great talent from an early age. He studied with Belgian violinist Eugene Ysaye between the ages of 11 and 13, and then joined the Paris Conservatoire. He left there at the age of 15, and subsequently performed with a number of different orchestras. He formed an association with Ravel after giving his first performance of Ravel's 'Tzigane' in 1925. He formed a close friendship with Sergei Prokofiev, and his European career began in 1925, when he became leader of the Oslo Philharmonic.

Leon Barzin
Article Abstract:
Conductor, Leon Barzin, used a precise, elegant technique in his work as a conductor. He was born in Belgium in 1900, and his parents then emigrated to the US. He became an assistant conductor at the American Orchestral Society in 1929, and then became music director and principal conductor the next year, when that organization became the National Orchestral Association. He was later music director at the New York City Ballet, before moving to Paris, France, in 1958.

Jeanne Loriod
Article Abstract:
Ondes martenot player Jeanne Loriod was born in Houilles, France, in 1928. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire and in 1950 joined the ondes martenot quartet formed by Ginette Martenot, sister of the inventor of the ondes martenot.
