Rock's colonial status tops election agenda
Article Abstract:
Gibraltar's ruling Socialist Labour Party, headed by chief minister Joe Bossano, is focusing on independence from Spain as its main campaigning theme in the run-up to the general election. Bossano has committed himself to ending the island's colonial status, and is seeking 'free association' with the UK by the end of the 1990s. In contrast, the opposition conservative Gibraltar Social Democrats (GSD) are promising to renew links with Spain and improve relations with the UK.

A thorny road to sainthood
Article Abstract:
The Pope is expected to announce in May 1992, the beatification of Monsignor Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, the founder of Opus Dei. Opus Dei, founded in Spain in 1928 as an antidote to socialism and anarchy, is widely criticised for its cult like methods of recruitment, indoctrination and infringement of personal liberty. The Catholic Church's new beautification procedure will likely lead to swift canonization despite criticism of Monsignor Escriva.

The grass that heals starts its journey to Europe
Article Abstract:
Cannabis growers working around the town of Chefchaouen in the northern Rif mountains of Morocco are estimated to supply up to 70% of the cannabis which enters the UK. The 1997 harvest is expected to be very good, and large quantities of cannabis will soon be transported secretly across the Mediterranean through Spain and the Netherlands. Most local people prefer to grow cannabis, which requires little attention, than subsistence crops such as maize.
