Ruined by a lie, not a lifestyle
Article Abstract:
The recent case of David Ashby, the Conservative MP who lost a libel action against the Sunday Times newspaper, highlights some key trends in public views on such issues. His mistake was not in indulging in homosexual practices, but in being seen to be hypocritical by denying what had taken place. Nowadays, people can accept a gay politician, but Ashby did not realise that simply admitting to his actions would have gained him public support.

Each day they embraced, chatted and then laid waste to one another in public. But they still hope to live happily ever after
Article Abstract:
The marriage of Conservative MP David Ashby and his wife Silvana has always been one of sharp contrasts, with the couple often clashing dramatically. This has come to public attention during the recent libel action taken by David Ashby against the Sunday Times newspaper. His wife actually gave evidence against him, and has continually alleged that his is homosexual. In turn, he portrayed her during the case as spiteful and obsessive.

Dear John, the weather's fine and the Chianti is good. Why are people worrying about where I go on holiday?
Article Abstract:
UK politicians have traditionally taken into account their image when selecting holiday destinations. However, they have still left themselves open to criticism in some cases. Some are keen to avoid the more upmarket destinations, aware that many ordinary people cannot afford holidays there, while others feel that holidaying in France or Italy, for example, cannot be classed as too extravagent.
