The Independent suggests ten measures of economic and insitutional reform for international confidence in Britain. It recommends an immediate reduction of interest rates to 5%, activation of road and rail projects, revival of the housing market, banks to continue lending to small businesses, the Bank of England becoming independent, the Treasury having a sole responsibility to balance the budget, an independent forecasting unit, a Department of the Economy, restoration of the pound sterling's European connection and a commitment to free trade.

Issues concerning the management of the UK economy are discussed. It is argued that trust is a key element in successful economic management. Fine-tuning the economy is often not really feasible.
