Second crisis hits bankers to the great and the good
Article Abstract:
Barings was established in London, England, as a merchant and a banker in the mid 18th century, and at one stage was the most powerful bank in Europe. However, it suffered a serious financial crisis in 1890, and a new company had to be formed to pay off the debts of the old business. It financed many of the leading schemes of the 20th century, and by the end of the 1980s was managing large sums of money for clients in Tokyo, Boston, London and Hong Kong. It is now facing a second financial crisis, and this time may not be fortunate enough to recover.

Democracy in the developing world
Article Abstract:
Most developing countries have non-democratic government. More advanced urbanisation, education and employment in agriculture are related to high incidence of democracy. The social environment of developing countries does not help the establishment of a democracy. Independent and voluntary agencies can help the development of democracy. Subnational groups within societies may cause problems in establishing democracy. The level of popular determination for democratic representation affects success.

The good ship Democracy
Article Abstract:
The Hellenic community in Britain celebrates 2,500 years of Greek democracy with a reconstruction of the ancient Athenian warship, the Hellenic Navy trireme Olympias. It will travel along the River Thames propelled by 170 rowers. In the 5th century B.C. Greece had a fleet of 200 triremes, rowed by paid citizen crews, not slaves. Skill was gained by practice. The modern Olympias has electronic aid to increase speed.
