Sentimentality is not enough
Article Abstract:
The publicity surrounding the case of the couple who are soon to be the parents of siamese twins has raised a number of issues about bearing and caring for handicapped children. The couple state that they never really considered having the twins aborted, and media coverage has praised them for this. However, this view is clouded by sentimentality, and does not take into account the great emotional and financial burden which handicapped children can bring. Abortion is often seen as evil, but parents must be helped to shed sentimentality and see it as a real option.

Anti-abortionists' conception of a baby lacks conviction
Article Abstract:
The UK's abortion laws have attracted criticism from many sources, including the Roman Catholic Church, evangelicals and fundamentalist Muslims. These groups believe that an embryo is exactly the same as a child from the moment of conception, thus making abortion the same as murder. However, if they really believe this, then it is surprising that they are so passive in their resistance to abortion. They claim to believe that innocent children are being murdered, but fail to take more positive action than simply calmly stating their opposition to abortion.

Emotion, abortion and tragedy
Article Abstract:
A number of events which took place in 1995 served to revive the debate about the ethics of abortion. Some observers argue that the rights of the unborn child, however handicapped he or she is likely to be, should be given top priority, while others believe that the mother's right over her body is more important than the rights of the child. There is concern that medical experts do not advise strongly enough in favour of abortion, for fear of attracting negative publicity.
