Shades of Weimar as Indonesia crisis stokes dissent
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's financial difficulties are beginning to have political repercussions, with demonstrators calling for the resignation of President Suharto. The collapse of the Indonesian currency has led to instability and left many ordinary people in despair as the cost of basic commodities rises sharply. There are also fears of mass unemployment. President Suharto's position now seems in danger, although bankers and investors are concerned about the prospect of him being replaced by potential Vice-President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, who is seen as an unrealistic statist.

Japanese debtors do a vanishing act
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for Japanese people who owe money to loan sharks to arrange to suddenly disappear. In some case, they enlist the services of companies who help people in difficulties to vanish without trace. Many Japanese people regard bankruptcy as a crime, and they fail to realize that there are legal measures which can be taken if a business gets into difficulties. It is becoming more common for whole families to vanish, rather than just individuals.
