Article Abstract:
Priest and guerrilla Manuel Perez Martinez was educated at a Catholic seminary, and then trained for the priesthood in the city of Zaragoza, Spain. He was confirmed as a priest in Rome, Italy, in 1966, and went to work in a poor district of Madrid, Spain. He soon transferred to Latin America, initially to the Dominican Republic and subsequently to Colombia. In Colombia, he became connected with the political group Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional, or National Liberation Army.

Juan Bosch
Article Abstract:
Writer and politician Juan Bosch was born in La Vega, Dominican Republic, in 1909. He was involved the renewal of Dominican literature that was fostered by the debates of the La Cueva group of writers. He became particularly known for his short stories.

The Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado died on Aug 6 2001 aged 88. He was briefly a communist politician at the end of the 1940s. One of his most respected novels is 'The Violent Land' written in 1943.
