Sir Edward Playfair

Civil servant Edward Playfair took a First in Classics at King's College, Cambridge, England, and then went on to read History. He joined the Inland Revenue in 1931, moving to the Treasury in 1934. He was Permanent Under-Secretary of State for War between 1956 and 1959, governor of Imperial College of Science and Technology between 1958 and 1983 and International Computers and Tabulators Chmn between 1961 and 1965. He was appointed KCB in 1957.

Nigel Clive

Intelligence officer and writer Nigel Clive was born in London, England, in 1917. He studied History at Christ Church, Oxford, England, and served in MI6 during the second world war. He later worked for the SIS and the Foreign Office.
