Sir Joshua Hassan
Article Abstract:
Lawyer and politician Joshua Hassan had a very significant impact on the political life of Gibraltar. He first became interested in politics during the second world war, when many non-combatant Gibraltarians were sent to live in other countries. He was called to the Bar in 1939, and in 1942 launched the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights. He testified before the United Nations Committee on Decolonisation twice in the 1960s, and was the first leader of Gibraltar to claim that the colony's future should be decided only by its inhabitants.
