Sir Peter Abeles

Businessman Peter Abeles grew up in Hungary, but fled to Romania during the Second World War. He travelled to Australia in 1949 and began selling books and clothing door-to-door. He founded Alltrans with George Rockey in 1950. This company was operating around 500 lorries in Australia by 1967, when it merged with TNT Ltd, of which Abeles subsequently became Chief Executive. In 1979, TNT and News Ltd jointly purchased Ansett, and through this deal Abeles established close links with Bob Hawke.

'Thalidomide doctor' guilty of medical fraud.' (Dr William McBride found guilty of misrepresenting experiment results)
Article Abstract:
Dr William McBride, 65, who alerted doctors to the danger of thalidomide, was found guilty of misrepresentation of experiment results in Sydney, Australia in Feb 1993. His research institution Foundation 41 was experimenting with the anti-morning sickness drug Debendox to establish whether it produced birth defects. The long tribunal found him innocent of eight complaints about his obstetric work. Merrell Dow withdrew Debendox from sale in 1983.

Euthanasia on the last frontier
Article Abstract:
Australia's Northern Territory is generally undeveloped and conservative, but it is to see the country's first legalised euthanasia bill. A substantial pro-euthanasia lobby has developed, and MP Marshall Perron has gained considerable support for his private Rights of the Terminally Ill bill. This legislation would cover any terminally-ill Australian who travelled to the region.
