Six months with cockroaches for company
Article Abstract:
Some Queen's Own Highlanders on duty in Belfast, Nothern Ireland are billeted in an old Victorian mill in cramped conditions and with cockroaches in abundance. Some have said that they are happier and more comfortable out on the street on patrol rather than in barracks. Because government policy means the British army numbers are being reduced, gaps between tours of duty in Northern Ireland have fallen from 24 to 15 months. The mill has four storeys, was built 148 years ago and now accommodates 19 officers, 35 senior non-commissioned officers and 190 men.

Ireland's hope for a new dawn
Article Abstract:
It appears that UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern may have been successful in negotiating an agreement in the talks on the future of Northern Ireland. They have been particularly pleased that Unionist leader David Trimble has gained the endorsement of his party executive for the deal which is now being put together. However, there have been some last-minute hurdles, and agreement in these talks will only be the first stage in a lengthy political process.

The bombs that blew away peace in Ulster
Article Abstract:
It appeared at the beginning of 1996 that there were good prospects for reaching a permanent peace agreement in Northern Ireland. However, extensive political talks proved ineffective, and the situation at the end of 1996 is considerably more tense that it was at the beginning of the year. It is very likely that Northern Ireland will see renewed violence, but many observers believe that the situation there will gradually improve.
