Slush fund for Thai poll set to soak up 500m pounds sterling
Article Abstract:
Many observers of Thai politics have drawn attention to the high levels of intrigue and corruption with which the outgoing government of prime minister Banharn Silapa-Archa has become associated. Many ordinary Thais have also been shocked by recent revelations of political corruption and dishonesty, even though they are accustomed to this sort of behaviour among politicians. There is a widespread feeling that bribery will be rife in the run-up to the general election on Nov 17, 1996.

Mystery virus kills 31 children in Taiwan
Article Abstract:
The Taiwanese government is seeking international advice on how to combat a mysterious viral disease that has already led to 31 deaths among children under five. The virus can attack the body very quickly, with early symptoms being no more alarming than those of a heavy cold. It is feared that up to 500,000 children could already be infected, and nursery schools have shut down in an attempt to stop further infection. Parents and child care workers remain very concerned.
