So whose fault is it, Mr Campbell, if the press is obsessed with trivia?
Article Abstract:
Alastair Campbell, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's press secretary, has expressed the view that the press is guilty of focusing on trivia and of ignoring the real state of the country. He is also aware that readers, as well as journalists, tend to like stories based on drama and disaster, rather than real facts. In fact, much of the trivia relating to the government originates from politicians and their advisers themselves. Furthermore, Campbell must consider how much he has done to assist journalists who are genuinely aiming for high standards of reporting.

Labour MPs should revolt against Jack Straw's 'tough' asylum bill
Article Abstract:
Legislation currently going through the committee stage in the UK House of Commons will remove from asylum-seekers the right to claim benefit. Instead, they will be allocated vouchers for clothes and food. It will also introduce the right to dictate to asylum-seekers where they must live. The government has adopted this tough approach because it fears that the UK could become overwhelmed with immigrants, thus damaging racial harmony. It is now time for the government to take a new line, indicating that it does not see immigration as a serious threat and that the UK has a moral obligation to help those in need of asylum.
