Soldiers of fortune, or barmy armies?
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong rise in the number of self-style militias in the US recently, and this has led to the publication of many survivalist, militia-linked magazines. They mainly serve to put forward a wide range of conspiracy theories. Most are only small, with circulations of less than 5,000, and can be obtained only on subscription. Robert K Brown, founder and publisher of Soldier of Fortune magazine, has attempted to distance himself from them.

Making it means flaking it
Article Abstract:
It is very common in the US for people to cancel arrangements at the last minute, particularly if they receive a more attractive invitation. Very few people are willing to make firm commitments, and this can make it hard to arrange events such as dinner parties. It can take some time for non-Americans to become accustomed to the etiquette of last-minute cancellations, and they can often feel offended.

Legislating with a vengeance
Article Abstract:
California's 'three strikes you're out' law mandates a 25 years-to-life sentence for a third felony conviction. It will require the state to considerably increase prison capacity, as the prison population is forecast to rise by more than 70% as a result of the law. It was passed by popular demand, with public interest being aroused by the publicity surrounding the murder of a 12-year-old girl.
