Supergun silence still a mystery; Clark denies knowledge of 'Savoy mafia' meetings
Article Abstract:
The UK parliament is conducting an inquiry into the supergun exported by the UK to Iraq. Oral evidence given to the Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee on Feb 27 1992 failed to provide any proof that the government had prior knowledge of the export of arms to Iraq. The inquiry scrutinised government mismanagement, allegations that the UK secret service had knowledge of the exports since 1988 and that civil servants had not informed senior officals about major issues. Former Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alan Clark denied allegations that he undertook arms deals from the Savoy Hotel in London.

Crofters face threat from 'bureaucratic eco-warriers.' (Scottish crofters suspicious about Scottish Natural Heritage)
Article Abstract:
Many crofters farming in the far north of Scotland remain suspicious about Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). They feel that this organization is excessively bureaucratic and that it threatens their livelihood by placing too great an emphasis on environmental protection. The conflict between crofters and SNH is reflected in controversy over opposition by SNH to plans to establish a shrimp farm on the Hebridean island of Harris.

Smith stands firm against 10p tax band
Article Abstract:
Shadow Chancellor John Smith was opposed to tax cuts financed by borrowing in the current economic situation. It was impossible to retain expenditure levels, cut the basic income tax rate to 20 pence, and balance the budget. Increasing VAT or widening its range would pay for the tax cuts. The surprising increase in public borrowing was needed to fund the recession.
