Sweden's welfare meltdown has lessons for Labour
Article Abstract:
Sweden has seen reasonable economic growth over recent years, but despite this is facing a number of serious problems. Unemployment is rising, the gap between rich and poor is growing wider and consumption is rising only very slowly. The population is growing older, and this is making it increasingly difficult to fund the welfare state. Some observers are now expressing doubts about whether a centre-left government of the kind currently ruling in Sweden can introduce welfare reform more effectively than a right-wing government.

On the edge of the lost world
Article Abstract:
Trieste, Italy, differs considerably from other Italian cities. It is located very close to Slovenia, and its history was greatly influenced by being developed by the Austro-Hungarian empire as the port for Vienna, Austria. The city's architecture, which is still essentially Austro-Hungarian, and its location are a strong reminder of the historic divisions of Europe.
