Bank merger worsens 'Big Apple' debt crisis
Article Abstract:
The merger of Chase Manhattan and Chemical Bank may well enhance New York's status as a financial centre, but in practical terms it will lead to the loss of around 4,000 jobs in the city and of a considerable amount of tax revenue. New York is facing a serious financial situation, with the public debt now at $23 billion and no positive benefits being seen from extensive tax incentives to persuade companies not to relocate. It will be further damaged by this new wave of job losses.

A mother, her baby and the bottle
Article Abstract:
The case of Deborah Zimmerman, an alcoholic who has been charged with first-degree attempted homicide and first-degree reckless conduct for placing her unborn child in danger, has attracted considerable controversy in the US. If she is found guilty, she could face up to 50 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. It is thought that this is the first case in the US where homicide charges have been brought against a woman for excessive drinking while pregnant.
